Yoga
Dr.
Rolf practiced yoga extensively herself in the 1920's
and used much of her knowledge of yoga in developing
the foundations of Rolfing. Yoga and Rolfing both
hold in common that when the body is lengthened and
balanced, the individual will be in an enhanced state
of health. I have practiced many styles of yoga over
the years including Shadow Yoga, Anusara, Iyengar
and Ashtanga. I like my yoga slow, deep and fluid,
without any spiritual overlay.
One
of the main benefits of Rolfing to the yoga practitioner
is that it addresses the specific asymmetries in your
body. Because most yoga classes are intended to open
your body in a general way, you will stretch your
body for the same duration on both sides. However,
most people have asymmetries in their body that will
not be addressed by this approach. My work can help
you become aware of your asymmetries and give you
some tools to work towards more balance through custom
targeted stretching and strengthening.
Yoga
poses are a gateway into understanding how your range
of motion might be limited in some directions and
more open in others. Beyond asymmetry, my work can
help yoga practitioners understand what poses they
need to emphasize to be more efficient in their practice.
Private
Yoga Instruction
If
you are new to yoga and want to learn the basics,
I am available for private instruction. I also work
with people to increase flexibility, gain more symmetry
or learn more about proper alignment. I also teach
the Moving the Shadow sequence of Shadow Yoga. Private
sessions are 75 minutes long and may include some
bodywork to help you deepen the postures.
